Combining language and culture while celebrating historic agricultural architecture
Beit Le Ivrit
Beit Le Ivrit, which freely translates to ‘Home of Hebrew’, is a project that combines language, culture and the original architecture of the historical Moshava (agricultural colony) in Rishon LeZion. The compound includes 1.5 hectares of land and four main buildings: two historical and two new. The original “Haviv” school building will be preserved and used as a museum space telling the history of the school itself. “Medal House” nearby will also be preserved and repurposed as a cafe. The two new buildings – inspired by original Moshava houses and specifically the old winery house in the Kerem street – will house the new “Haviv” school and the “Hebrew House” (meaning of Beit Le Ivrit).
The urban, landscape and architectural concept that defined the planning of Beit LeIvrit is the creation of an introverted public space, one with atmosphere, tempo, color, materiality, acoustics and a climate of its own – at the heart of the city. Its elongated land plots and courts are a testament to the agricultural plots of the original Moshava. They give the space unique attributes of deep perspectival vision and a flow of motion. The planning of Beit Le Ivrit Compound further emphasises these traits with its two elongated buildings, which further enable a sequence of open spaces and garden plots dotted along the ground surrounding the buildings. These can be seen from all along the compound. The fusion of indoor and outdoor space allows the space to cater for a diverse set of events. These include public gatherings, meetings, conferences and more for large and small audiences alike.
