Transformation of an active civic square - from a motorized zone to a pedestrian oasis

Project Name

Bialik Square

Transforming Bialik roundabout to an active civic square – from a motorized space to a pedestrian space. The importance of the circle void is both in the history of the city and the first City Hall building, as well as in the other Bauhaus Modernist buildings surrounding it. Bialik Square and Bialik Street have some of the prime examples of the Bauhaus and Modernist buildings in Tel Aviv, living up to its name as the ‘White City’. These buildings marked by the passing of time, are being painstakingly restored.

The Museum of the History of Tel Aviv-Yafo opened in 2009 in what used to be the old Tel Aviv Municipality building in Bialik, one of the most iconic public spaces in Tel Aviv. Chronicling the expansion of Tel Aviv from a suburb of Jaffa which used to be the main entrance to the city only 100 years ago, to a bustling world-class metropolis and center of culture, the museum uses visual and multimedia displays to show life in the city through the decades.

Housed in the old Municipality Building, the Museum of the History of Tel Aviv includes the office of Meir Dizengoff, Tel Aviv’s first mayor. His office space has been restored to its former glory while offering a breathtaking view across both Bialik Square and Bialik Street. The architecture itself is what makes this museum so interesting.

Nearby on Bialik Street are also the Bauhaus Museum, Reuven Rubin Museum, and the Bialik Museum dedicated to the former national poet of Israel.
