Archaeology of the Future: a Tourist Icon at the heart of the Agricultural Colony
Moshava Garden
What is the role of the Moshava in the Urban Landscape of Rishon LeZion?
Baron Garden; Moshava Garden as a primary player in the perception of the city in the ongoing present. There are significant collective and private memories from the garden, throughout its history. The personal intuition is aimed at holding onto the past.
The architectural responsibility in planning such a place requires understand how to utilize these memories in the present and future.
In what way is it possible to develop the Moshava Garden as a tourist resource?
Part of the colonies that began at the time of the Baron created its most beloved memories of the gardens, the vineyard, and the wine industry, making it a tourist attraction and rejuvenating the entire Moshava Center.
At the start of the 1890s the Moshava center was a blossoming garden including a Nursery, agricultural experimental fields, a flower garden, a fruit and a vegetable gardens. With the closure of the Nursery, an orchard and the Palm Tree avenue took its place with a walking trail all around. The ‘Orchard Gardens’ are a memento of and an attribute to the old Orchard and gardens at the heart of the Colony. They include a number of grown trees and fruit trees such as Blue Jacaranda, Citruses, Strawberries, Figs, Pomegranate, Almonds and also allow for places to wonder between vegetable gardens and others with changing functions.
Planning proposal:
We suggest turning the Moshava Garden to ‘Orchard Garden’, a testimony to the gardens and orchards of the old colony with its abundance of tree.
The planning is based on three principles:
- The ‘available’ as infrastructure to planning the garden – preserving the existing trees, the Palm Tree avenue and expanding it.
‘ The Palm Boulevard’.
The previous memoir of the garden area and its origins as a thriving agricultural Orchard. The ‘Boulevard’, from the Orchard and until today functions as a promenade to ‘See and Be Seen’, a place to stroll, meet, observe, revere and meditate.
2. The Secret Garden – manifested in the Garden-edge Pergola and the Vineyard Pavilion.
‘Garden Pergola’
Serves as a side wall to the garden on the west, and protection from the busy Herzl-Setchuan street on its other side, creating the aura of a Secret Garden. The variety of vines create a changing color display all throughout the year.
‘The Vineyard Pavilion’.
A light iron structure serves as a basis for the vertical grape vines and defines the plaza of 1300 sq meters with its changing functions. These include performances, public gatherings, external exhibits among others. Through its location next to city hall, the Vineyard Pavilion’ serves as an extension to it, both as a structural alter ego and also as a testament to the historical Baron’s vineyard.
3. The Orchard’s divisions is guided by the original Ottoman land partitions , leading to the grown trees in the garden and the hiatus beyond.
