Lakefront returned to public use

Lakefront returned to public use

Project Name

Dekel Beach

The Dekel Beach in the North of Tiberias is one of the last pieces of public land available to the public along the Kinneret lake. Seeing as the waterfront is mostly taken up by private establishments and large amounts of infrastructure, this beach site holds a golden opportunity for its nearby residents.
Over the years this area sandwiched between Road 90 and the Kinneret has been filled with dust and boulders, and thus created a physical barrier between passers by on the sidewalks and the waterfront.

As part of the opening of The Kinneret Trail, a street level promenade is planned all along the lakefront. Included in the plans are bicycle paths, walking paths, and a stage doubling as a breakwater barrier. This double feature will protect the upper promenade and street level while enabling a moment of rest for passers by, along the lakefront.

All along the stage there are ramps and stairs that enable an accessible path to the beach. As part of the project, there are several ‘preservation’ acts planned for the many Washingtonia Palm trees found along the beachfront, and a number of other trees lending their canopy to the beach. On top of these, an ‘intervention’ act is planned to plant several more trees along this pathway.

The implementation of the promenade and the improvement of the beachfront is the first developmental steps carried out in the North of Tiberius. On the opposite Western side of the street, several hotels are planned to open and thus create a tourist and residential point of interest along the Kinneret’s lakefront.
