Leveraging urban infrastructure renewal for the development of a public pier on the Bat-Yam beach.

Project Name

Bat Yam Pier

The Historic Bat Yam pier – the “Mizpor” – located at the southern edge of the Bat Yam promenade, is remembered by Bat Yam veterans with great nostalgia. It served as a central waterfront meeting place in the early years of the city’s foundation.

The pier was built on top of a central drainage duct collecting water runoff from the city’s streets to the Mediterranean Sea. Over the years the duct system deteriorated and became a public hazard.

The need to renew the drainage duct created an opportunity, and offered a budget to transform the infrastructure into a multi-purpose pier and public amenity. A convenient fishing point, a balcony overlooking the sea and a huge access ramp that offers disabled and wheelchair access to the beach were offered back to the city, atop the new drainage duct.

The main deck of the pier was designed 50cm above the western balcony keeping a clean line of sight across the promenade, westward. In the future, local fish spawning pools will be added around the pier, renaturing local fauna on site.
